Without exaggeration I can say that buying a Peloton has been one of the most impactful purchases I've ever made. Exercise was a huge part of my recovery after being diagnosed with dermatomyositis three years ago. Peloton helped me maintain a consistent habit of exercising. With Peloton's huge variety of classes, no matter where I was on my journey rebuilding my strength Peloton met me there. At first all I could do was walk. Slowly. And not very far. Having the guided walks from Peloton helped divert my attention from the frustration of the situation and focus on getting the work done.
Over time low intensity cycling was added to the rotation. As I began to trust my body more and more some bodyweight strength was mixed in. I even started doing a little bit of yoga! Eventually strength classes started using weights and I started having "race days" for my cycling classes. When I was overwelmed mentally sitting for my treatments I'd re-center myself with a meditation class. No matter how I was feeling there was a Peloton class for that moment.
I'm not back to my level of capability prior to my diagnosis, but I'd likely be far worse if it were not for Peloton.
You don't have to. You get to.
One of my favorite Peloton instructors, Jess Sims, likes to start her classes by saying "You don't have to. You get to." For me that statement has taken on an entirely different meaning. Everytime I lift weights, run, bike, pick up my kids etc. is a privilege. One to not take for granted. After being so close to not being able to do those things I have a newfound appreciation for those abilities. They are not promised to us. So while I still can I'm going to appreciate every day I can move.
Incredibly thankful for what Peloton has brought to me! Looking forward to several more years together! 💪
